Project brief
Commission by an aspiring author to illustrate a children’s short story they had written. A Word document with clip art ideas was provided with a view to FayJay illustrating a dummy book to submit to publishers. The story featured a central dog character.
We delivered illustrations for all spreads as roughs and designed the cover concept.
Style and composition
We used a digital painterly style for the cover artwork. The dummy spread roughs were traditional pencil sketches.
Dummy spreads
The author had written the manuscript and used a collection of clipart and images curated from various locations to convey some ideas about the illustrations. There were not the correct number of spreads, rather a double page storyboard. We designed our doggy character and placed him into the scenes, selecting the most appropriate spread visuals and page turns to meet the 32-page layout required.
Your words our pictures
The picture book format is one that we enjoy and excel at – if you have the words (draft or final) we can help you bring them to life.
